I dig it! Joe is a great, and Tragic character. I like the addition of themes like the loss of innocence, and does this does a great job explaining why Emily is the way she is. I can't imagine she wouldn't have developed a hidden self hatred for herslef. I'm sure she forives her father Joe, but knowing that he died unable to look her in the face...that's a rough thing to hear.
